I will not go into detailed explanation of basics of IoT which can be found already all over the Internet, but will present few of interesting uses of IoT that could save lives of people.
Sadly, recent catastrophic event involving Germanwings Airbus A320, which crashed on Tuesday, killing all 150 on board.
Now, allegedly one of pilots locked himself in cockpit and deliberately crashed plane into the mountain. No one could do anything to prevent it from plane itself, but what if we implement IoT in future airplanes?
This is something which can be made today, no need to wait. Airplanes could be equipped with piece of hardware which would send all details to ground control, and in case of events like above ground control should have option to seize control of aircraft and prevent pilot to do anything harmful to aircraft which could endanger passengers.
Similar type of security could be used on Ships, trains etc.
Then, we could use IoT with people who are suffering some terminal illness such as Alzheimer that can cause old people get lost and cannot be found quick enough to be saved.
These are some uses that could be really useful.
Sinister use of IoT ? need I to remind you of Terminator movies ?
